Shake it from the Top
Our first Danceteria single from Shake in 1989, which made Radio 1 playlist and
dropped us onto an unsuspecting public! Simon Bates (bless him) gave us our
first airing, and, as one of the first guitar-indie bands to receive air-play on
daytime Radio 1, we helped set the tone for national airplay in the '90's.
Fine by Me A classic
Monkees-esque jangler off Shake, inspired (not) by the album for the Scottish
band "The Close Lobsters" that I recorded with Phil Vynall the year
before......
I Love A recording that involved
Holly Lerski, our old bass player (Check out her new band Angelou), and me, a bottle and a half of
whisky, and a late night recording session at the old Raven residential studio. We
recorded the guitars and vocals together live (how Holly ever played that solo
on her £3 acoustic I'll never know!), and the next morning we overdubbed bass
and percussion (quietly - with a hangover!).
Thru the Lantern A
chance to hear the classic tape-loop-fest that was a bonus track (remember
those?) on the CD version of our first album, Shake - still sounds super-cool
after all these years - the sign of a youth mis-spent with a 2 track and a
razor blade! I had the idea on the way home from my first studio, after an
evening of listening to too much Dukes of Stratosphear, and, after first
recording the song with my drummer of the time, who seemed to think that a Phil
Collins drum fill every fourth bar was a great idea, I looped two bars of
straight drumming, one from the beginning of the take - one from the end, and
used this as the basis of a "Nivens-do-a-Tomorrow-Never-Knows" which
proved immensely popular - note all the Beatles stolen riffs , Macca bleating
on about what a crap drummer Ringo was, The Day-in-the-Life orchestral fill,
etc......
Play Blue A track that -
at Record Co insistence, was issued on both of the first two albums, and failed
to make an impression in either case. After "A Major Label" (guess
which!) refused to sign us - owing to Danceteria (our old label) wanting too
much money - we gave up trying to break America, and began to feel grateful for
making such an impression on Europe...

House Come
Tumbling Down The first single off Sex, Lies and Gaffatape - The one
decrying-the sad-state-of-life-on-your-own-in-bedsit-UK, and claiming back the
night for the late groovers of East Anglia........ (still in demand live)...
Mirror & The C I am
starting to think that this would be a good first single (and we never listened
to the Monkees - or the Rembrants - honest)! (actually penned b4 Friends hit
the screens.....)
Find The Girl I hate to
see good talent go to waste - this is a tribute to all those who have travelled
the rough road of the music biz with me over the years, only to hang up their
guitar or whatever when the going got too tough. I respect the fact that other
people have different priorities to mine - but I just wish that they could all
have it all.....
Still Sometimes an echo
of your past comes back at you and catches you completely off-guard. There's a
whirlwind of confusion, tenderness and sadness in these bitter-sweet lyrics. And
the most beautiful bridge over the river Thames gets a namecheck too.....
Ain't that Her Michel
Belland from the french bands The Pollen and now Sherwood, gave me a
compilation of some cool 60's stuff about a decade ago, this track was on it. I
don't for sure know who wrote it, but I would love to know so I can credit them
on the album. This is a heavily re-arranged version by us and it is, I think,
more in the spirit of the time, rather than the more lengthy drawn-out
original. (I think the original may have been by a band called The Remains -
does anyone know? Email me! htxx)
Back at U God gets
inspired by the back of a Kellogs packet....
Hard Times It's not just
spontaeneous gestures that get results in love - sometimes perseverance works
too.....
Never Want To Sometimes
you get dropped in the doo-doo by the person you trust most.....
Over With Her I'm sure
Iggy Pop will have something to say about this!.....
Set Me Free 'You drink
much too much' she said - and I just grinned.....
Thomas Said Mr Waits gets
a barbed compliment here, and I go walkies from responsibility again.....
Victim of Apathy An
entreaty to some poor young thing to cast responsibility to the wind and get
happy behind the bike-sheds.....
