HOWARD TURNER
Producer/Engineer.
Member: RePro - The Guild of Recording Producers, Directors and Engineers.
D.O.B. 24/02/59 - Languages: English/French.
BIOG.
After a childhood spent in war torn Indo-China, and a BA (in third world development of course!)
the music business seemed like a nice quiet life (you know, early nights, regular pay etc. etc.)
so I started Raven Recording as a studio in 1984 and quickly developed a reputation in the
indy and rock sectors as a producer/engineer, working in the early days with such luminaries
as the now late Peter DeFreitas (Echo and the Bunnymen), Steve Johnson (Teardrops) etc...
With the development of Raven as a residential facility in '87 I started to concentrate more
on guitar bands and "live feel" projects, this fitting in well with my long standing interest
in manipulating ambient sounds and "less than dead" recording environments.
After selling the studios in '91, I was free to spread my wings and pursue much more
varied freelance production/engineering and performance interests, creating Raven
Recording Services to oversee all the above and also my studio and equipment design
projects with my other company, The Studio Wizard Organisation.
STYLES
Primarily guitar orientated material. ( Being a fanatical devotee of "live" type recording -
starting with a full performance to catch the feel of the thing...)
The whole
approach hinges on making the most of the live feel of the band, and over the years
I have developed a not inconsiderable reputation working with successful major
rock and indy bands in this manner.
Throughout my career I have kept the "frustrated muso" in me at bay with my own
BeeSide signed band - THE NIVENS - Knocking out jangle/psychedelia and making sure
I never ever forget what its' like in the recording booth when the red light goes on.....
EQUIPMENT/LOCATIONS
I have a good bunch of studios in the UK and Europe that I use regularly, but I am never
afraid of checking out something new... just give me some good live rooms, a decent
2" machine, a few toys...and a happening band...
Budget-wise I can provide studios for projects over a wide budget range from around
£200/day for tracking, up to flying fader automated classic mix rooms...all in all...give me a
budget and I can provide the right combination of facilities to suit the project. (All of
these studios are residential, or provide a residential option.)
INSTRUMENTS
Where it may help, I'm passable on guitar, slide guitar, blues harp, some odd (very odd)
keyboards, additional vocals and programming....all if and where required - never imposed.....

Howard Turner - Personal Profile
After a childhood spent in war torn Indo-China, and an education taking in a BA in 3rd world
economic development and a PGCE teaching certificate in geography and physics, I
entered the music business for a rest - you know, quiet life, short hours, regular pay.........
Having created a succession of studios for myself culminating in the high profile Raven
Recording residential facility in Norfolk, which was involved in the initial creation of the
UK Studio Accord, and having been invited into the British Record Producers' Guild,
I sold this facility in '91 in response to the changing climate for studios in the UK. Major
changes in the way facilities were conceived and run were called for, and a fresh
approach was needed.
My long term ties with both the provision of audio engineering education, and technical/
product development for manufacturers, together with knowledge acquired
building studios for myself and some of my old studio clients, as well as the wealth
of experience gained from over a decade's worth of front-line studio experience
were soon to be put to good use.
Embarking upon a career as a freelance engineer and producer, I consolidated my
reputation as an open minded and diplomatic producer, capable of realising the sonic
aspirations of difficult bands and complicated live recording projects - my production cv.
covers a list of the famous to the infamous - the trendy to the trying! And that story continues...
My broadening horizons led me to guest lecturing on sound engineering courses and to
running some short courses in their entirety, ultimately this let me use my teaching skills
to help redesign these courses to maximise their effectiveness. Exposure to aspiring
professionals and soon-to-be-studio-owners switched me on to the potential of a
service/training/support-led studio supply, acoustics and design company and
as a result I created The Studio Wizard Organisation in '92 to design and build studios,
supply equipment - new, used and refurbished (with guarantee), provide training, maintenance
and service contracts, and generally to provide levels of backup in the pro-audio sector
that we have all taken for granted in our offices for years - who would envisage running
a complex computer network without backup? (Yet for years that has been the situation
in pro-audio, unless the organisation involved was sufficiently large to create and employ
its own dedicated team).
Under my guidance, the SWO has developed into a major resource for the industry,
allowing new projects to be created safe in the knowledge that there is a wealth of
experience on hand to make sure everyone gets it right, and that it stays that way.
